About EERC

The Environmental and Economic Resource Centre is a scientific research organization that works with a network of local and international partners to catalyze and develop inclusive agriculture, sustainable livelihoods, natural resource conservation, and environmental management in Africa. EERC undertakes research and capacity building to develop policies, scalable technologies, and innovative practices with real impact on poverty reduction, food security, ecosystem health, conservation, and livelihood development. EERC operates four main programs: agriculture and environmental management (AEM), natural resource conservation (NRC), livelihood and economic development (LED), and human resource and capacity building (HRCB) programs. The programs cover various research topics broadly related to agriculture and the environment. More specifically, EERC research focuses on climate-smart agriculture, food systems, health and nutrition, conflict and migration, natural resource management (land, water, forest), renewable energy, carbon markets, land use change, rural livelihoods, gender, and social inclusion.

About the Fellowship

The 2026 Cohort III (Spring) fellowship seeks to leverage evidence-based research in Nigeria’s agri-food and environmental sectors to support evidence-informed policymaking, particularly on climate change and sustainable agriculture. EERC is inviting qualified early-career researchers affiliated with Nigerian universities or research institutions to apply for its 2026 Fellowship Cohort III as visiting researchers. Fellows will conduct policy-relevant research in any of the following thematic areas:

  • Land-Use Systems and Governance
  • Climate Change and Biodiversity
  • Gender and Social Inclusion
  • Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Applicants are expected to leverage relevant regional or national secondary data to generate evidence-based research towards improving the policy process. However, fellows with high-quality primary data should attach their data and a data description to their application at submission. Selected fellows will be hosted at the EERC Headquarters for three months beginning from 13th April 2026. Research work will be jointly supervised by top-tier senior researchers drawn from various Nigerian universities. In addition, an internal EERC researcher will also be assigned to each fellow for direct supervision and mentorship throughout the program.

 

Fellowship Benefits

  • Monthly stipend to support living costs during the fellowship period depending on experience and academic qualifications throughout the fellowship The stipend is in addition to your statutory salary from your home institution. Therefore, applicants are expected to secure approval from their respective institutions to be eligible.
  • Fully paid accommodation equipped with 24-hour electricity, internet access, and a gym, within the EERC research facility.
  • Access to research mentorship from a team of highly experienced Nigerian academics and in-house
  • Training and travel opportunities during the fellowship

Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a Master’s or PhD degree in a relevant field awarded within the past five
  • Be currently affiliated with a Nigerian university or research
  • Show proficiency in statistical or econometric software such as R or
  • Be from relevant disciplines such as Agricultural Economics, Agroecology, Environmental Science, Development Economics, or related fields.
  • Demonstrate capacity to develop proposals related to at least two of the listed thematic

Application Process

All applicants will be required to have at least two reference letters on the institution’s letterhead from their institution. One of the letters is from your respective head of department, and the other is from the head/representative of the institution. Other documents required for the application include:

  • A motivation letter
  • A concept note (5 pages maximum) describing the research proposal to be carried out within the fellowship period. The proposal should contain the following outline: background, objective, methodology, analytical approach, timeline, and expected References can be added as an appendix.
  • Description of Primary data should be attached by candidates who possess quality primary data and intend to use it.
  • Support letter from department and institutional heads
  • CV showing evidence of past publications as a lead author on any proposed research topic from high- impact journals.
  • Evidence of academic qualification
  • Copy of your ID card from your institution

All submitted applications that do not meet the above-listed requirements will not be reviewed.

Selection Process

All applications will undergo a two-stage review process. First, applications will be screened for eligibility and completeness. Next, a selection committee will evaluate the quality of the proposed research, the applicant’s research profile, and alignment with EERC’s thematic priorities. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed to assess their ability to deliver on the proposal. Final decisions will be communicated no later than March 31, 2026. Please note that selected applicants will be required to present a letter of release from their respective heads of institution or their representative after the notification of the fellowship award.

About the Fellowship

As part of our commitment to strengthening research capacity and promoting evidence-based policies in Nigeria’s agri-food and environmental sectors, EERC is seeking passionate and qualified research professionals to provide technical guidance, supervision, and mentorship to competitively selected scholars drawn from across research and academic institutions, working on the following thematic areas:

  • Land-Use Systems and Governance
  • Climate Change and Biodiversity
  • Gender and Social Inclusion
  • Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Prospective research supervisors are expected to have an in-depth knowledge and capacity to leverage relevant regional or national data to generate evidence-based research towards improving the policy process. Quality primary data will also be considered.

Responsibilities

 Visiting Supervisors will be expected to:

  • Assist in conducting a blind review of the EERC scholars’ program applications
  • Provide research supervision and mentorship to scholars drawn competitively from across Nigerian academic or research institutions.
  • Contribute to in-house research presentations for scholars and EERC researchers
  • Contribute to ongoing grant research proposals developed by scholars or EERC researchers
  • Collaborate with scholars on joint publications or policy briefs, where applicable
  • Participate in research outputs dissemination

Eligibility Criteria

  • Hold a PhD in a relevant discipline such as agricultural economics, development economics, environment and resource economics, food economics, agricultural sciences, or any other related disciplines
  • Applicant MUST be a lead author in at least TEN (10) relevant publications in high-impact journals, especially in any of these thematic research areas: Land Use and Land-Use Systems, Biodiversity and Natural Resource Conservation, Gender and Social Inclusion, and Water-Energy-Food Nexus.
  • Must have at least ten (10) years of postdoctoral research experience. Applicants in the cadre of associate professor and above will be more suitable, but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising postgraduate students or early-career researchers
  • Be currently employed by or affiliated with an academic or research institution in Nigeria
  • Possess a strong understanding of policy-oriented research in the Nigerian agri-food or environmental sectors
