Are you from Edo State? Are you coming home for the Christmas and New Year Holidays? If yes, then read this painful advice from me.
(1) Please come along with a generating set. For over 60 days, major cities in Edo State including Benin City, have been facing the worst, horrifying and deliberate darkness and power failure since 1951!!! Petrol Generators are the preferred choice of many as it is mobile and cheaper to run. Diesel engines are out! Cost of diesel is too high.
(2) Don’t drive into town in expensive cars. If you decides to board public transport, and intends to pass through Benin- Lagos Road, Abuja-Benin Road,and Efon – Benin Road, look for your most ill fitting and horrible dress and put it on! Look pitiable and poor. There is no arrogance in Heaven. Ensure no make up and expensive ear rings!!!
(3) If you have a large Family, break them up into batches and make sure you all travel in separate vehicles. Only survivors take care of victims!!!
(4) If possible, post your mobile phones ahead of you!! They cost and cause more problems at times like this.
(5) When you finally arrive home, don’t go painting your house , or family house . Ugliest the better. It’s a survival strategy.
(6) Immediately store these numbers on your phones: 08077773721, 08037646272 and 08067551618 . They are ( or used to) emergency police numbers.
(7) Anytime you go out to attend social event,make sure you are back home before 7:00pm and ensure to watch local television channels. You will be sufficiently entertained by local politicians as they promise heaven and earth, but can’t fix the unprecedented darkness around them.
(8) If you have money, don’t be greedy: fly to Benin Airport In Peace and check into any of the major hotels in GRA, especially those that confidently advertise the sizes of their generators, colors of toilets, number of security guards and food in billboards in front of their hotels. The only drawback is that, arising from running diesel cost, expect a complete shutdown of generator by midnight: they want you to sleep peacefully.
(9) Ensure you or your kids don’t fall sick. It is very dangerous a decision. The few good doctors are going on holiday too.
(10) If you drink. Check where you buy your drinks . This is the headquarter of fake and substandard “ hot” drinks and not Lagos. Regulation is poor.
