As the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intensifies, a growing chorus of Nigerians, civil society groups, and opposition voices are calling on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and curb Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s alleged exploitation of public resources to advance his faction’s anti-party maneuvers. Critics point to the minister’s recent inauguration of a parallel PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), reportedly hosted in a hall belonging to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), as the latest example of blurring the lines between official duties and personal political battles.
The event, which took place in Abuja, has drawn sharp rebukes for its use of government facilities. Eyewitnesses and social media footage show PDP loyalists gathering at the FCDA’s conference hall, typically reserved for developmental briefings and public sector engagements, to formalize a splinter BoT loyal to Wike. This comes amid accusations that Wike, a key architect of Tinubu’s 2023 election victory despite his PDP affiliation, is leveraging his ministerial position to undermine the main opposition party from within. Critics describe his actions as anti-party and contrary to the ethical expectations of his office.
“We cannot allow a federal minister to weaponize taxpayer-funded infrastructure against his own party,” a source said on X this afternoon. “This is not just an internal PDP matter; it is a misuse of FCT resources that President Tinubu must address to uphold transparency and prevent further erosion of public trust in his administration.”
The inauguration was a dramatic affair, marked by fiery rhetoric against the party’s establishment. Speaking at the event, factional PDP Acting Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed criticized the Adolphus Wabara-led BoT for losing moral balance, citing Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter over alleged anti-party conduct. Mohammed described the gathering as a significant turning point and said it was intended to reaffirm the principles that founded the PDP, including justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law.
This parallel BoT, comprising Wike allies from across the country, positions itself as the “true moral compass” of the PDP, directly challenging the Wabara faction and deepening the party’s schism. The move follows Wike’s camp’s recent takeover of the PDP national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, which sparked protests and security concerns earlier this week.
Adding to the controversy are fresh allegations of Wike intertwining official FCT business with personal and factional interests. Recently, the minister defended photos of his sons, Jordan and Andrew, accompanying him on high-profile international trips, including a visit to the United Arab Emirates for infrastructure discussions and an earlier delegation to China. Wike dismissed critics in a Channels TV interview, stating, “No law prevents my sons from traveling with me on official trips. They were part of my official delegation, and it is important for them to learn about Nigeria and government firsthand. Family travels like this are educational.”
As of press time, neither the Presidency nor Wike’s office has issued a statement on the allegations of resource misuse. With PDP’s national convention approaching amid the ongoing turmoil, tensions within the party remain high.
