On a quiet Sunday, October 29, 2006, the skies above Abuja carried a plane filled with men, women, and children bound for Sokoto. Families waved goodbye, friends exchanged laughter, and inside the cabin, passengers settled in for what should have been an ordinary flight. But just moments after takeoff, the aircraft lost control, plunged into a maize field, and exploded in flames. In an instant, silence fell upon the land, and the lives of ninety-six souls were swallowed by the fire, including the Sultan of Sokoto and a woman who had only been tending her farm.
Amid the burning wreckage, where cries faded into smoke and twisted steel, a miracle unfolded. Nine people emerged alive from a scene that should have claimed everyone. Among them were three sisters, daughters of the former Kogi State governor, who were seated in different parts of the aircraft yet all survived.
Another survivor, Esther Olamide, later recalled how the world seemed to collapse around her as she screamed, “Blood of Jesus, Holy Ghost fire.” Darkness took her, but when she opened her eyes again, she was lying among broken bodies and scattered metal, alive when so many others had perished.
One young woman walked out without a single scratch. She later confessed that if she had remained in the seat originally assigned to her, she would never have lived to tell the story. That day, she realized that survival was not a matter of chance but of divine grace.
The scene that met rescuers was one of sorrow beyond words. Rain fell upon fire and ash. Families wept by the wreckage. In hospital beds across the city, the injured clung to life, while nine hearts continued to beat against all odds. When the president visited the survivors, he called them living proof of God’s special mercy.
It was a day of unbearable grief, yet also a day that testified to something greater than human strength. Out of fire, smoke, and despair, grace lifted nine souls and carried them into life again. Their story remains a reminder that in the darkest hours, when death spreads its hand wide, mercy still speaks, and grace still chooses who will walk away.
